How doors work
New to owning a garage door, or new to this one? These guides walk through what the parts are called, how the door should behave, and what a healthy door sounds like.

Repair & Maintenance
Will you tell me if the door should not be used?
Yes, plainly and at the door. A slack or frayed cable, a gap in a spring coil, a door hanging crooked, a bracket pulling out of the framing or an opener that fails the reversal test are the kinds of findings that put an item in the stop-use group. When that happens you see the reason yourself, the door is left resting in a safe spot with the opener unhooked, and the fix is written up and quoted so it can be booked. Do I need to be home for the tune-up?
It helps to be there, at least at the start and the end. At the start you can describe what you have noticed and where, and open the garage. At the end the technician walks you through the record, shows you the balance test and the reversal tests, and points out anything to watch. If you cannot stay, arrange access and a way to reach you by phone so any part replacement can be approved before it is done. Garage Door Tune-Up
Will the door be as good as it was before?
In most cases it comes back better, because the reset includes truing the track, replacing worn rollers and correcting the misalignments that had been building unnoticed. The exception is a section creased by an impact: it may work perfectly well after the reset yet keep a visible dent, and the technician will tell you whether it is sound or worth replacing at some point. You are shown the door running before the visit ends. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
Why do bottom sections get damaged so often in winter?
Meltwater runs under the bottom seal during a thaw and freezes the door to the slab overnight. When the opener starts in the morning, it pulls on a door that is anchored at the bottom, and something yields: the section bows, a hinge tears from its stile or a cable jumps. Salt and slush thrown off the car then corrode the lower edge. Keeping the seal free of ice and rinsing salt away protects the new section. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Should the track be lubricated too?
No. The track is meant to be clean and dry so the wheels roll rather than slide. Grease or spray in the raceway collects dust, sand and, in winter, salt and slush, forming a paste that grinds the wheels and can let a roller skid instead of turn. The technician cleans the track and leaves it dry; at home, a wipe with a cloth and an occasional sweep of the bottom few inches is all the track wants. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Can I tighten loose hinge screws myself?
Yes, hinge screws are a homeowner task. Disconnect the opener, leave the door closed, and snug each hinge screw with a socket wrench without forcing it, since overtightening strips the hole. Leave the bottom brackets alone; they anchor the cables and are under spring tension. If a screw spins freely or a hinge is cracked, stop there and have it looked at, because a stripped hole needs a fresh anchor rather than more turns. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
How often should the track and its fasteners be checked?
A glance each month from inside the garage, with the door closed, is enough to catch a bracket standing off the jamb or a hanger starting to lean. Twice a year, snug the bracket bolts and lag screws, wipe out the channel, and watch the door make a full trip to confirm every roller stays in the track. The industry guidance also suggests an annual visit by a trained door technician, who checks the track with the rest of the system. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Will the springs be checked as part of cable work?
Always. Cables and springs are one system, and a spring that is weak, mismatched or wound short is a frequent reason a cable goes slack in the first place. The technician looks for breaks, measures the spring against the door weight, and confirms the correct number of turns when winding back. If a spring needs replacing, that is explained and offered as its own decision rather than folded in unannounced. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
My remote only works when I am close to the door. Why?
Short range is almost always interference or a weak signal, not a broken opener. Certain LED bulbs, including ones fitted in the opener's own sockets, emit noise on the frequency remotes use. A remote battery near the end of its life also loses reach before it fails outright. The technician tests range with a known-good remote, swaps bulbs, checks the antenna wire hangs free below the head unit, and replaces the battery or remote as needed. What should I check before calling?
With the door closed, pull the red handle and try lifting the door by hand; note whether it is heavy or stays up on its own. Look at the chain for slack, rust or a broken link, and at the head for pale shavings. Note whether the motor runs at all, whether the door stops short or reverses, and where the trolley sits on the rail. The model on the head's label and a photo of the rail help too. How often should belt tension be checked?
A look every few months is enough: with the door closed and again with it open, the belt should run level with no sag below the rail. A yearly service that checks tension against the spring length, looks at the sprocket and pulley and runs the balance and reversal tests keeps a belt drive quiet for its whole life. Check again after the first hard cold of the winter. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
What is a wall-mount opener and who is it for?
It is the operator that lives on the wall rather than the ceiling. Fixed where the torsion shaft ends, it rotates the shaft to raise and lower the door, and nothing hangs overhead. It suits cathedral and low ceilings, garages with lofts or lifts, and anyone who wants a very quiet door. Because there is no trolley holding the door shut, it comes with a powered deadbolt on the track and a monitor that stops the door if a lift cable slackens. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Why are springs and cables handled by technicians?
Springs store substantial energy, while lift cables and bottom fixtures transmit the forces that raise the door. Replacement requires the assembly to be secured, tension to be controlled and matched parts to be installed in a defined sequence. Trained handling, proper tools and the selected system's instructions keep that work orderly and precise. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
What makes a steel garage door insulated?
Insulated steel sections contain a core material between or behind steel skins, depending on the product construction. The core reduces heat flow through each section and often adds rigidity. Section joints, glazing and perimeter seals also influence how the complete opening performs, so compare published information for the exact assembled door rather than judging by thickness or appearance alone. Can a wind-rated door include windows?
Yes, when glazing is part of the selected configuration. Window size, position, retainers, and the surrounding section construction may affect the reinforcement layout, so the desired design is chosen before ordering. Factory-prepared glazed sections keep appearance, strength, sealing, and documentation aligned rather than turning windows into an alteration after installation. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
What happens if the garage floor is not level?
The survey measures the variation and determines how the bottom section and seal can meet it. A flexible astragal can accommodate modest changes, while a pronounced crown, dip or damaged threshold may call for related floor or threshold work. The door itself is installed level for reliable travel; the sealing approach is selected separately to follow the practical shape of the floor. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
